Happy New Year!
Dear Neighbor,
Happy New Year! As always, I hope this message finds you and your loved ones well and healthy. As we continue working to create a democracy that represents you to the maximum extent possible, I would like to take some time to share some big wins we had in 2021 for NY-16.
We hit the ground running and introduced over 10 bills and resolutions that are making their way through Congress. This includes the Green New Deal for Public Schools bill which would invest $1.43 trillion in our K-12 schools to make them adequate and resourceful centers for students and teachers, families, and the greater community. This also includes the Care for All Agenda resolution to give care workers better pay, benefits, and support, because after all - care work affects everyone. In addition, I led 20 letters to fight for the most pressing issues and co-sponsored and signed onto over 500 bills, resolutions and letters in Congress - many of which you took the time to write to me about.
I enjoy working with my colleagues to advance legislation to benefit our communities and this country. I am also empowered to consistently deliver funds and resources directly to our neighborhoods. Some of that funding and those resources in 2021 included:
-
$152,048,227 from the American Rescue Plan
-
4 vaccination sites in Co-Op City, Mt. Vernon, Wakefield and Yonkers - areas heavily impacted by COVID-19
-
$17.1 million in project funding for community programs and services such as the $12 million secured with Senator Schumer to revitalize downtown New Rochelle and improve connection between communities as part of the LINC Project
-
FEMA resources, grants and loans to recover from Hurricane Ida as a result of working with Governor Hocul and President Biden
-
Over $2 million for job training and placement programs at centers like Bronx-Jacobi and the YWCA, in the Bronx and Westchester for at-risk youth through collaboration with Governor Hochul
-
A Career Fair with over two dozen employers that helped neighbors throughout the district secure employment
My vote for the Build Back Better Act would generate some of $1.75 trillion in investments for New York to ensure universal child care, paid family leave, lower prescription drug costs and more if it passes the Senate. I look forward to working with my colleagues to deliver even more resources to New York and our nation this year.
As always, my entire office is committed to serving you and our neighbors as we enter 2022. Last year, I’m proud that we::
-
Took over 7,500 phone calls;
-
Helped more than 2,000 neighbors with federal issues;
-
Held 100+ meetings with community organizations & neighbors;
-
Sent 30 + newsletters (just like this one) and over 15 town halls, roundtables, and webinars to keep neighbors informed;
-
And responded to over 100,000 emails from people like you.
In 2021, we set the tone for all that our district is able to accomplish. I look forward to serving you further and hearing from you more.
Peace and love,
Rep. Jamaal Bowman (NY-16)
